Remember that Walterdale is a community theatre, and that everyone involved in a show shares the job of keeping it clean.
The Building Director and the Technical Director (both members of the Board) are responsible for the overall state of the theatre, but people on the production team are responsible for different parts of the theatre on an ongoing basis. Below is a list of different areas and who should be in charge of keeping them clean. If there is a problem with any of these areas, talk to the Production Manager of your show.
Lobby and Ground Floor Washrooms:
There is a commercial cleaner who is hired to wash floors, vacuum mats, clean counters and sink, refill paper and soap dispensers, and remove garbage prior to each show. During the show, the lobby and washrooms are monitored and kept clean by the Front-of-House volunteer staff.
House and Workshop:
When a show moves into the theatre, the house and the workshop should be clean and the dust covers should be covering seats. During the build and production, it is the builder’s job to keep the stage and workshop clean. Since other people like lighting designers and operators and props and costume people also use the stage, it is the Production Manager’s responsibility to make sure they clean up after themselves, and the Stage Manager often assumes the job of cleaning as the cast moves on to the set.
After the show, it is the entire cast and crew’s job to clean the theatre, top to bottom, and leave the house and the workshop clean and tidy.
Green Room, Bathrooms, Rehearsal Hall, Kitchen, Booth, North and South Stairs:
When you move in this area, it should have all been cleaned by the cast and crew that just left, and it’s the job of the current cast and crew to keep it clean during the rehearsal and the run. That includes things like washing and/or sweeping floors, vacuuming mats, cleaning counters and sink, refilling paper dispensers, removing garbage and replacing burnt-out light bulbs.
Soap, paper products, and cleaning supplies are in the supply closet by the door to the booth and/or the supply room by the coffee bar. If anything is getting low, let your Stage Manager know.
Exterior – Front and Sides:
A contractor is hired to remove snow and other debris from in front of the theatre, but if there is snow or ice or other hazards in front of the doors, please try to do something about it. We don’t want anybody to “break a leg!” until they get on stage.
